Dell Data Protection Terrible Software
As you can see below, my question that was asked a year ago still has not been answered. Dell Data Protection has been a pain in my side ever since we purchased it. The support is terrible, and there is hardly any useful documentation out there. I am in the same boat again with a different laptop, unable to decrypt and uninstall because the temporary keys downloaded from the server are encrypted. I have disabled all encryption policies on this laptop, yet the user profile is still encrypted. This software is absolute JUNK! We are moving to sophos encryption.. their support is much more knowledgeable, and their software is much easier to work with.
·Reply
- @Ivan,Thanks for the tag.@Nathan1234,I'm engaging DDP Enterprise team on your behalf. Dell will be in contact with you.
- Terrible would be an improvement. With everything suspended, on a fresh 2012 R2 install, with just dotnet and OS updates installed along with Rabid Replay, it eats up every bit of ram just sitting and doing nothing.Apparently, they forgot to code in the bit where you release ram - eventually.Restarted the service - no active protection - every vm suspended.Immediately opens over 100 threads.I open the browser to double check that I didn't miss anything - that opens another 30 threads. And ram usage is ticking slowly upward.Prior to the Dell version of this app, I had zero problems.Starting to regret I ever updated.Add to that: Agentless backup works - but can't create a standby vm - I get a stupid something 2000 errorand poor fidelity in standby vm's - disk controller and nic are changed from what is specified in the vmx fileThis is just unfit for purpose.Good job, Dell.No wonder you spun it out to Quest - but it's still your unpolished turd.
Unable to decrypt!
So we have Dell Data Protection Enterprise and I am trying to decrypt the files on a laptop so I can move the files to a new laptop. Whenever I try to decrypt the laptop says that it can't decrypt the file that contains the keys. Can someone help me out? This is for an executive and I really need it done ASAP

DDP|E help?
I see a comment on here that this is not the right place to go to ask questions about Dell Data Protection | Encryption, but there is no indication of where the right place actually is, so I'm posing my question here anyway.
I'm trying to set up the DDP|E software with two policies - one to encrypt only external media when plugged in; mostly for desktop PC's that will not be leaving the office, and another to encrypt the full disk as well as external media; for laptops that might contain sensitive data and may travel off-site. Based on these needs, we ordered licenses for external media only and enterprise. I would really like to configure my endpoint groups to distinguish between which license is installed on the machine, to determine which policy to apply, because I don't want to try and encrypt the full disk of a machine we have only installed the external media edition on. Is that possible, or do I need to pull all the computer name's for each situation and fill out an endpoint group specification with all of those?
·Reply
- For anyone unfortunate enough to end up purchasing Dell Data Protection | Encryption in the future, the answer to my question is 'no.' There is not a way to distinguish between endpoints based on the version of their own software that is installed. It honestly does not make any sense to me that this wouldn't be the very first endpoint grouping mechanism that they got to work, because why would I ever want to apply a full disk encryption policy to a PC that only has the External Media Shield license, but such is the sad state of this software.Moral of the story: STAY AWAY FROM DELL DATA PROTECTION!!!!!
- I'm in the same spot of being stuck trying to find any information about the current state of the product and how it actually works. How do you actually apply Enterprise Edition Licensing vs External Media Edition Licensing? I somehow have half my people on one license and half my people on another but I'm not sure how it was applied and trying to find anyone at Dell that can explain it to me has been met with delays followed by delays to 'find the right person'. I know this is an old thread but it sounds like I'm not the only one.
Endpoints going out of compliance after reboot
We just recently installed DDPE and we are having an issue where all of our devices after a reboot will go out of compliance and ask for a reboot to go back into compliance, and once we reboot it is in compliance.. but the next reboot will cause it to go out of compliance. Can anyone help with this issue?

- Hi Nathan, the folks behind this page are the backup and recovery software folks. DDPE is security -- I'll see if I can find someone to help (and if spiceworks will let them actually post ;) ).
Server 2012 VM with Deduplication and AppAssure protection
I need to protect two MS Server 2012 VM's that are going to manage our new DFS file stores. We are in the process of converting from many physical servers with individual DAS to a handful of virtual Servers and DFS. Both of these VM's have Windows Server 2012 Data Deduplication running, When I added protection I got a warning that, 'The volume that you are trying to protect has Windows Deduplication on, which may cause issues with accessing the data.' I was able to complete adding of protection but completed it paused until I can get some answers. We have a third party setting up the new Virtual servers and assisting with the migration of data, so at this point no one has been able tell me why deduplication is enabled, and whether it need to remain enabled post migration.
Any insight to this would be greatly appreciated.

- Hi @another steve :)I'm not sure of the answer, I've got an email out there. But - you will probably get faster support on this if you go over to our community on the Dell Tech Center,..support monitors our forums. When someone gets back to me I'll respond here as well.
- Hi - here is what I heard back from support:Anyone confirm that this is indeed a workaround if we cannot turn off the windows dedupe? This is correct. The current AppAssure release is not able to understand how to present Windows De-duped data on a Core without Windows de-dupe enabled. Furthermore, you would have to enable the de-dupe on the Core OS volume as that is our mount point location and cannot be changed at this time (C:ProgramdataAppRecoveryMountPointsetc.Using LMU on the agent and mounting to a volume with De-Dupe turned on is the only way to access the data inside this type of recovery point.
Policy Change - Every Startup
I recently setup a new laptop to make use of the pre-installed Dell Data Protection software.
I don't usually bother with this, but the laptop in question was one used by our financial manager and therefore could hold some quite sensitive data.
I set it up, and entered a admin password for DDP console. All seems to be working fine, except every single boot & login the user gets a box asking for the admin password due to a recent policy update.
How do you stop this appearing.. I have no idea what policy is being updated, none have been changed from initial setup. An yes, on every boot we are entering the admin password.. once that happens its happy until the next reboot.
Thanks
Russell.

Core Auto Update to v 5.4.2.189 causes me to jump ship
Hi all.
Well I can respect and realize that there are always growing pains etc when new releases, features, and other general updates are available, today is my last straw. Since I installed this software, pre the Dell purchase, I had very few issues (v4 with the slow console). Since Dell has gotten a hold of it, I can write a book on all the issues, paused protection or NO protection, replay services that NEVER start on a reboot.repositories that get corrupted, or go offline until a full scan is completed..more than once..on and on and on.
Last night was no exception.
As I posted in the Dell Appassure Forum this AM, I am on my last days of this particular babysitting job. As of last night sometime after 1:15am, Appassure v5.4.1.77 decided to do an AutoUpdate to v5.4.2.189.
STATUS: Failed miserably. And I mean miserably..to the point of loosing ALL faith is this software.
Looking at email from Replay last night, it was telling me one of my DC's were off-line. Hmmmm, thats never a good sign. A quick VPN connection to confirm Appassure is WRONG and my DC is just fine..Appassure on the other hand is NOT. As it was early morning I decided to wait until this AM.
Coming into work this AM.
Core has failed the upgrade...in the process all my protected machines were no longer being protected. 8 hours of no protection..AGAIN.
Cancelled the Upgrade job and tried to restart it numerous times ( 5 to be exact). Continues to FAIL.
Not only that..here is the kicker....I get a call from my ISP about an hour later saying my bandwidth was going nuts from about 2:00am last night until this morning. Do I have anything going on with our network???
Hmmmm well..Apparently YES I DO. Its called >>>>>>>APPASSURE
So for over 7 hours Appassure was consuming bandwidth even tho it was't doing anything. Brilliant!
This backup software is not even close to a set it and forget it solution. It continually has issues. Almost EVERY day I use it, something somewhere fails.
I do not think there is anything that could make me stay with this product. Not even if it was FREE. Well..maybe, but I would still have to think about it.
As much as I hate to say it...'The bottom line is': I can no longer justify the time required on maintaining this software at a functional level to the people I report to. They no longer want to hear about the issues...period!!
I am now off to see the Wizard...about some backup software!!
·Reply
- Well I have to recant a bit on my previous rant, as it looks like new features in this release for Hyper-v standby were causing my issues..Support (Randy) was very good in finding & correcting the problem via Webex and all we had to do was delete the old standby's and PROPERLY configure new ones. Maybe if I would have read the release notes & change history... anyway it's running again flawlessly now, can't really blame Dell to much on my problem. My apologies for previous rant, my bad. I do LOVE this product between updates, still seems to be some issues though every time there's an update, probably due more to refining the product and adding new features, and keeping pace with changes to other related technologies such as Hyper-V.
- Ok..still farting around with this so called software. Going to try going to 5.4.2.189.Couple questions please:Where are the release notes?? Clicking release notes link on 5.4.2.189 download page in Portal, gives me release notes for 5.4.1.On the Replay Core srvr, Program DataLocal LogsGibraltarAppAssure, There >> 13000 files in here taking over 15gb of space..how can I clear these??Was going to run the update, but these files are sucking the life out of my hdd.Tks muchUpdate: Ok..don't bother looking for release notes from the Portal Download area. There not there. Now just wondering about these 13000 files, all having .glf extensionsEdited Jul 25, 2014 at 16:49 UTC
Microsoft Failover Cluster - How to Recover?
This is a cross-post from the other forum, which seems to have little activity). > http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/data-protection/f/4816/t/19580329.aspx
Wanted to also post here since this one caught me by surprise and many may not be aware of this limitation until it's too late. Many of us have Microsoft Failover Clusters (SQL, Exchange, etc.), which AppAssure gladly accepts and backs up as a cluster object. Many of us also replicate this data to our DR site with the belief that if needed, we can spin up this cluster object as a VM. But I learned that this cannot be done! >
So the question then becomes, once you have backed up your Failover cluster, how do you efficiently recover it?

AppAssure Reporting
![Dell Data Protection Encryption Download Dell Data Protection Encryption Download](/uploads/1/3/3/2/133282556/334684347.jpg)
When will you have any sort of usable reporting package in AppAssure 5? The canned reports in the console stink and offer me no value and to get them to run automatically is becoming a waist of time. Scripting isn't my forte so trying to use powershell has been a nightmare. What I am looking for and I am assume many others is a similar reporting package (and features) like in Replay.
Thanks
·Reply
- Thanks Ivan. Here is something else to,. I was told by Dell/Appassure sales people that a reporting package would be included in the new 5.4 release. To me it's pretty important for an enterprise backup solution to have some sort of useful reporting. I guess I am looking good for a good report that summarizes my storage, my snapshots, my VSB exports, the integrity checks, and replication all in one report. That report also should fit on one or two pieces of paper much like the summary report in Replay 4.7. I Do Not WANT TO HAVE TO LOG INTO MY CORES ON A DAILY BASIS TO SEE HOW THEY ARE DOING. A backup solution should be set it and forget it... Well kind of..
- Would like to know if there are more reports available. thanks!
Configuring Automatic Updates on AppAssure 5 Core
Trying to upgrade from 5.3.7 to 5.4.1 at the request of a Dell Support tech who is helping me resolve a couple of issues with certain pesky machines that AppAssure can't seem to back up properly. According to the Dell AppAssure 5 UserGuide, this should be as simple as configuring automatic updates.
'To configure update settings
1 Navigate to the AppAssure 5 Core Console and click the Configuration tab, and then Settings.
2 In the Updates pane, click Change.
The Update Settings dialog box displays.
3 In the Check for new updates text box, select the frequency for checking for and installing updates after
the nightly jobs are complete.
4 Specify the handling of the updates if they are available by choosing one of the following options:
• Install them automatically (recommended) or
• Notify me but do not install them
5 Click OK.'
But.. I don't have an Updates pane on my Configuration>Settings tab in my Core Console.
Please advise.

Appassure 5.3.7.68
Hi all.
Srvr2008R1/16GB Mem/ 8 cores
Ok..this is driving me nuts. If I have Windows updates to do on the CORE. I pause all protection, suspend VM exports etc. I install the Windows updates and reboot. (Yes..everything gets PAUSED until manual resume)
Why is it that every time I do this it looses my repositories and I have to manually 'scan' it to have it available again. Repository is 2.5TB. Not only that, I also notice that if ANY PC is rebooted, the Appassure Service NEVER starts on its own..EVER. So when I go looking at whats going on, low and behold, No protection again because this service refuses to start on various PC that had windows updates that require reboots.
I get no email alerts that tell me things aren't working. So what is the email supposed to be sending me?? Because in fact, this Core has never sent me an email, except when I sent a TEST to make sure it works!! Since then, not a single email about status.
Then as it scans, it takes all day to do this, so I have ZERO protection until this is finished. It would be faster for me to create a new repository.
This is the second time in two days this has done this. And before that, it lost it just because, for no apparent reason. Email alerts DID NOT tell me the repository was OFFLIne. So no protection for days until I realized it.
Not to mention that this software is unable to update agents remotely, another deal breaker.
Anyone else having this issue?
Opps..spoke to soon. Now the console is stalling, Firefox 'not responding', then a script error, then the script error popup changes to 'not responding'. Script error is: https://replay:8006/apprecovery/admin
/DXR.axd?r=1_44,1_76,..along with 50 more numbers.
Argggggggggg Frustration is Maxxed out.
Lets reboot and watch my repositoriesdisappear, because I have nothing but time to waste.

- Yea.. the iops are going be low on anything with only four spindles. I think what it all boils down to is the fact that the AA Datastore is in fact a database. As such, databases have high IO overhead and this one is no exception. Download drivers for hp deskjet 3050. Something like Storage Craft that is file based does not seem to have these kinds of issues (at least not from the little I have been able to play with it).I have 18 spindles in my main AA core, but I have smaller slower servers that I use as secondary/replication cores and doing anything with them sucks.
- I'm posting this with a measure of caution, BUT ever since installing 5.4.1 my archiving speeds are way up. Like, actually usable speeds. Here's my process:1: Create archive and copy to a different server2: On different server, import archive into a test core to verify archive integrity3: Once archive integrity is verified, write the archives to tape for off site storage. Before, my exports were slow but tolerable around 30 MB/sec, but my imports into the test core were HORRIBLE around 10 MB/sec. I have now exported several endpoints including a 4 TB one and the average speed was around 50 MB/sec and sometimes higher. My 4 TB volume was imported into the test core in under a day. You could have pushed me over with a feather I was so shocked. So I'm not saying that AA is a fixed product, but my results since updating to 5.4.1 have been really really encouraging and that says a lot coming from me.
Could we have a GG take a look at this thread please?
Thanks!

- yup thanks for the call out!
issues with appassure just popped up
I am not sure what is causing this and have been everywhere. I looked in sql server and it shows the full text at the right locoation but i think appassure is looking somewhere else . Error logs show this .
The operating system returned the error '3(The system cannot find the path specified.)' while attempting 'ClearTree' on 'e:Epicorfulltextcatalogscustxprtcustxprt' at 'fulltext.cpp'(1816).
I have talked to epicor and they stated it is not there problem is is appassure. As in sql the path is
e:fulltextcatalogsepicor
Notice the difference in path names. This is why the path is not there. I can not find anywhere in the registry or else where that the path is on the backup server. Any help would be appreciated.
·Reply
- Also - we have a new AppAssure forum over on the Dell Tech Center - lots of seasoned AppAssure users answering these sorts of questions there too!
- So I think we have @mmoore5553 sorted..His Epicor software was creating tmp files, then deleting them before the next scheduled snapshot causing errors that were troubling him. Here's the explanation I gave him. If any of y'all use Epicor + AppAssure and can answer the question about specific file names, that would be sweet! Here’s a brief overview of howAppAssure works:It takes block-based snapshotsof the data you (or your predecessor ;) ) have told it to protect. Here’swhat it will do:1.First time youprotect a machine, it will record ALL of the blocks in a massive snapshot, andsend them over to the Core repository.2.Then you set theschedule of when you want the next image to be taken. You can go down to agranularity of every five minutes.3.Up until the nexttime an image is set to be taken, the smart agent is keeping track of all theblocks that change.4.When it is time totake the image, the smart agent packages up all the changed blocks, and shipsthem over to the Core repository.5.Go to 3; repeat. So what I think ishappening is that the smart agent is keeping track of those temp files thatEpicor creates, but by the time its ready to package up the next image, thetemp files have been deleted by Epicor. So AppAssure can’t package up thechanged blocks that it saw.

Buyer's Guide
- The business case for full-disk encryption tools
- Full-disk encryption procurement
- The top full-disk encryption products compared
- A who's who of the market-leading FDE vendors
BACKGROUND IMAGE: iSTOCK/GETTY IMAGES
This is part of a series on the top full disk encryption products and tools in the market. For more, check out our FDE product roundup.
The Dell Data Protection | Encryption product provides full disk encryption (FDE) capabilities for various desktop and laptop operating system (OS) hard drives. Full disk encryption is used to encrypt all data on a drive, so when the device is in an 'off' state (not booted), sensitive data cannot be recovered from it -- using forensic tools, drive examination and other methods -- and the OS itself cannot be tampered with.
Although this product is sold by Dell, it works on a variety of vendor platforms (not just Dell hardware) so practically every desktop and laptop can benefit from its use.
Product versions
Dell Data Protection Encryption comes in several forms, some of which support full disk encryption:
- Dell Data Protection | Encryption Enterprise Edition is the flagship enterprise FDE product from Dell. It is intended for environments with a variety of vendor platforms, including both Windows and Mac OS X systems. It provides centralized management capabilities for systems already using a self-encrypting drive (SED) for FDE. The level of security provided by this product is for most enterprise environments.
- Dell Data Protection | Hardware Crypto Accelerator is an add-on to Dell Data Protection | Enterprise Edition. Only certain versions of Dell hardware (particularly Latitude, OptiPlex and Precision systems) running on certain Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 or XP systems support it. Dell Data Protection Hardware Crypto Accelerator offers a higher degree of security than the Dell Data Protection | Enterprise Edition does alone. It is for environments with particularly stringent security needs. Security features include Trusted Platform Module (TPM) support and Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 validated encryption, which helps prevent tampering with cryptographic keys and associated authenticators.
- Dell Data Protection | BitLocker Manager adds centralized management capabilities to an existing or impending Microsoft BitLocker deployment. This allows the ability to manage most or all of the FDE products in the enterprise through the Dell Data Protection console. Dell Data Protection | BitLocker Manager is supported by the versions of Windows that support BitLocker.
Platform support
Dell Data Protection | Enterprise Edition is supported by a variety of operating systems, including the following: Microsoft Windows 10 Education, Enterprise and Pro; Microsoft Windows 8 and 8.1 Enterprise and Professional; Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Enterprise and Professional; Microsoft Windows XP Professional; Apple Mac OS X 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11.
Dell Data Protection | Personal Edition is supported on the following Windows platforms: Microsoft Windows 8 and 8.1 Enterprise and Professional; Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Enterprise and Professional; Microsoft Windows XP Professional.
Encryption and authentication support
Dell Data Protection Encryption supports Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128-bit and 256-bit keys. 128-bit is the minimum recommended key size for FDE, and 256-bit is the preferred key strength, so the key sizes provide sufficient protection against today’s threats (128-bit) and tomorrow’s (256-bit).
Dell Data Protection Encryption supports multifactor authentication, including integration with various enterprise directory solutions and public key infrastructures (PKIs). The product also supports the use of smart cards and cryptographic tokens.
Management of implementations
Like any security technology, Dell Data Protection | Encryption implementations need to be managed. This includes installing updates and upgrades, implementing policy through configuration settings (for example, setting the encryption key strength to be used), and monitoring devices to ensure Dell Data Protection |Encryption is functioning properly and has not been disabled by users, attackers or others.
Dell Data Protection | Enterprise Edition offers centralized management, which is much more popular than local management in most organizations because it does not require the administrator to be physically present at the device in question.
Licensing
Dell Data Protection | Encryption is licensed per device -- such as desktop and laptop -- not per user. It is available directly from Dell, and it can be pre-installed on factory orders of Dell devices. Current retail pricing is not made publicly available by Dell.
There is a free trial version available. The evaluation request form allows organizations to specify which of the Dell Data Protection | Encryption products they want to evaluate, such as Enterprise Edition or BitLocker Manager.
Dell Data Protection Encryption for Windows or Mac OS X
The Dell Data Protection | Encryption products offer FDE solutions for Windows and Mac OS X desktops and laptops controlled by organizations of any size. Encryption and authentication support and centralized management capabilities are as strong (or stronger) than competing products.
All in all, Dell Data Protection |Encryption is a strong candidate for anyone looking for an FDE product for Windows or Mac OS X.
